Road Town, on Tortola, happens to be the capital of British Virgin Islands. The city is on the Road Harbor, which is a sort of horseshoe in the center of the south coast of the island. The population is about 10,000 people. The name of the city comes from a derivative of a nautical term that defines a space less sheltered than a traditional port, but where ships can dock easily. The arrival at the port

This is without a doubt one of my best memories of Caribbean cruises, the arrival at the port of Road Town is great and absolutely requires you to be on the balcony of your cabin or on the main deck. Our boat arrived in the early morning with incredible brightness, leaving guessing turquoise water suitable for swimming. The yacht navigates very slowly in Tortola Bay, which gives us time to admire many small uninhabited volcanic and mountainous islands at dawn. We do not even dare to imagine the feeling that had to have Christopher Columbus discovering this little corner of paradise, lost in the middle of the Caribbean.

The cruising port of Road Town is very small and can only accommodate two cruise ships at berth. That day, the yacht will be positioned right next to a Disney Cruise line. If ever your ship is not the size required to dock, you may be invited to land by boat. Do not hesitate to inquire directly at the reception desk or on the logbook, as disembarkation usually requires good organization so as not to waste time on land. Cruise lines often organize small group boat trips and it is often necessary to make appointments before arriving at the port.

Visit Road town

It’s a safe bet that the duration of your stopover on Road Town is very short and do not allow you to cross the island up and down. Depending on the length of the stopover, the first solution for getting around the island is renting a car or scooter giving you the freedom to move at your own pace. Remember, you must be at least 25 years old to rent a car and that driving is on the left side of the road to the British Virgin Islands. The price of a car rental costs about $ 65 and $ 50 for a scooter.

Of course and almost everywhere in the world, many taxis offer you their service at the exit of the cruise port: reliable and affordable transport method, the taxis of the island offer a real local experience or mixes music and good atmosphere guaranteed.
